If you are seeking criminal legal advice because you found yourself in a bit of trouble, then you should look toward an attorney. Many organizations are supposed to tell you that they cannot give advice and many people offer advice when they are not supposed to.

A law library is for people to research legal matters and the law. They are usually open to the public and anyone can come in and research on their specific topics. The clerks are not allowed to give any type of criminal legal advice to anyone. They could find themselves in a world of trouble.

Anyone offering criminal legal advice should be an attorney or a lawyer. It is not a wise decision to take the advice of anyone who does not specialize in the field. Just because your cousin Joe got the same criminal charge 6 years ago doesn’t mean the same punishment will happen to you. A lawyer is going to be able to tell you if the laws have changed, what your best decision would be, and if you should take the criminal case all the way to trial. Never pay attention to your cousin Joe.

Also, don’t think that you will be too successful representing yourself on a criminal charge. It is a bad idea. If you are dead set on representing yourself and not hiring an attorney, then at least pay an attorney for an hour of his or her time so you can get a good idea how things are going to happen in the courtroom and what you should do. Be sure to be prepared and ready for anything that the prosecutor hits you with. An attorney will probably advise you to get a copy of the discovery prior to your pretrial. The discovery is the documentation of proof that the police department says that they have which will prove you guilty. Your job is to prove you are not guilty. You want to find any holes possible in the discovery provided, that is your best chance.

Criminal legal advice should come from an attorney or lawyer only that specializes in criminal law.
